‘Interspection’ is a term coined by the Victorian artist Sean O’Carroll to describe the contemplative psychological state of considering oneself as if from outside; as the other. Continuing his interest in psychology, O’Carroll strips his subjects bare creating a paradoxical state of vulnerability and confidence of character. These naked ‘inner selves’ gaze at their clothed double with a mixture of inquisitiveness and concern. They seem to ask themselves the ultimate question: who am I?
With a background in philosophy, phenomenology and transpersonal psychotherapy, Sean O’Carroll presents an intriguing series of elegantly constructed images that question the nature of subjectivity and self-understanding.
