Franky Tsang – UMBRELLA MOVEMENT IN HONG KONG

Franky Tsang | UMBRELLA MOVEMENT IN HONG KONG

Sydney-based photographer Franky Tsang’s project reflects upon the current state of politics in Hong Kong in the wake of the Umbrella Movement.

Following the decision of the Standing Committee of the National People’s congress of the People’s Republic of China to reform the Hong Kong electoral system, a mass civil disobedience movement led by Occupy Central with Love and Peace took to the main streets and places of the city from the end of September to mid-December 2014.

Deemed illegal and violently repressed, the Umbrella Movement has become a symbol of wide and spontaneous pro-democratic protest in the region. Tsang’s composite of photojournalism and portraiture allowed the participants to express opinions anonymously in a society where protests are undertaken at great personal risk.
