Now and When

Now and When is part of the Australian Centre for Photography's Social Inclusion program, a major new initiative that partners with existing community groups to use photography as a tool of empowerment, by gaining new technical competencies, building self-esteem and developing life skills.

About the Project

Now and When was a ten-week photography workshop which the Australian Centre for Photography ran at the Oasis Youth Support Network in Surry Hills in partnership with the Salvation Army. During the project the participants documented their lives now and made portraits of each other. In doing so they learned a range of photographic skills that enabled them to engage in positive ways with each other and with the broader community. The participants also created portraits to express their dreams for the future and re-imagine their identity. The young people in the program have all been homeless and are striving to improve their lives. The format of Now and When enabled them to see themselves in a positive light with the hope that they can achieve their goals in the future.
