This seminar focuses on the history of portraiture as a genre, its inception and its journey from the mechanical to the artistic. When did subjectivity for both the photographer and subject arrive? Who were the key players in establishing photography as both an art-form and vehicle for story telling and narrative? The seminar will also cover photography as truth teller, with examples of “appropriation” in relation to judgment and how the Australian Aborigines were represented in early history.
